New Delhi: Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has completed the first set of twin tunnels for Phase-IV construction. The two tunnel boring machines (TBMs), Bhoomi and Srishti, simultaneously broke through at Pulbangash Metro Station, connecting the 3 km stretch between Derawal Nagar and Pulbangash on the Janakpuri West – R K Ashram corridor (Magenta Line Extension).
This breakthrough is notable as both TBMs advanced concurrently over densely populated areas, including Rana Pratap Bagh and Punjabi Basti Colony, at a depth of 14-15 meters. The TBMs also passed beneath the Najafgarh drain, a challenging section due to its structural conditions.
The 2997-meter tunnel drive, completed in 14 months at a rate of 8.2 meters per day, represents the longest in Phase IV to date. Six cross passages are being constructed between the tunnels for passenger safety. This achievement comes shortly after DMRC’s August 2024 breakthrough at the Chhatarpur Mandir site on the Delhi Aerocity-Tughlakabad corridor.
The contractor for the project, M/s Afcons, will now focus on completing the remaining civil works for this section.
