New Delhi: BSNL and satellite provider Viasat have completed a trial that connects devices directly to satellites, potentially expanding mobile coverage in India. This trial, conducted at the India Mobile Congress, used a standard Android smartphone to send messages through Viasat’s satellite network, about 36,000 kilometers above Earth.
The demonstration showed that devices like smartphones, smartwatches, and even vehicles could connect to satellite networks without needing extra equipment. According to Viasat’s Chief Technical Officer, Sandeep Moorthy, this technology could help millions of people in India who lack reliable mobile coverage. It could also support industries like transportation, making things more efficient and safer.
By teaming up with BSNL, Viasat aims to build a broader ecosystem for satellite-based services. The company plans to continue working with partners worldwide to expand coverage, especially in areas that are hard to reach with traditional mobile networks. This trial marks an important step toward making satellite connectivity more accessible for everyday devices in India.
