Bengaluru: Google.org, the philanthropic arm of Google, has committed $4 million to improve AI literacy in India. The funding will support the Central Square Foundation, aiming to integrate AI-focused curricula into government schools and train 5 million students, parents, and educators over the next four years.
The grant will launch the AI Samarth initiative, focusing on empowering educators and students to engage with AI technology responsibly. Shaveta Sharma-Kukreja, CEO of Central Square Foundation, stressed the importance of adapting education to the growing role of AI in daily life.
In addition to this, Google.org’s Fellowship program will see Google employees assist Rocket Learning, an Indian non-profit. Their collaboration will develop Saheli, a generative AI tutor designed to support children aged 3 to 6 in early literacy and numeracy skills. Vishal Sunil, Rocket Learning’s CTO, noted the aim is to reach underserved children and eventually expand Saheli across 20 languages globally.
This initiative reflects Google.org’s broader efforts to leverage AI for social good, having provided over $60 million in funding to Indian non-profits since 2015, alongside volunteer support from Google employees.
