New Delhi: Balmer Lawrie & Co. Ltd., a public sector company under the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, has teamed up with GATX India Pvt. Ltd., a major private railcar lessor, to transport steel products by rail. GATX will lease three rail rakes to Balmer Lawrie, which will be used to move steel from SAIL’s Rourkela Steel Plant over 1,000 kilometers.
The agreement marks Balmer Lawrie’s entry into rail logistics, aiming to offer more efficient steel transport solutions. The partnership was formalized at a signing ceremony in Kolkata on November 11, attended by top executives from both sides, including Balmer Lawrie’s CMD Adhip Nath Palchaudhuri and GATX India’s President Saurabh Sood.
This deal is part of Balmer Lawrie’s efforts to expand its logistics services and tap into the growing demand for rail-based transport. It aligns with Indian Railways’ plan to boost rail freight. The company also plans to explore transporting bulk chemicals like caustic soda, supporting its aim to offer sustainable logistics solutions and enhance its market presence.
