New Delhi: The government has appointed Sanjay Kumar, a 1990-batch IAS officer from the Bihar cadre, to take additional charge as Secretary of the Department of Higher Education. Kumar will hold this position alongside his current role as Secretary of the Department of School Education and Literacy.
The decision, effective immediately, has been approved by the competent authority. Kumar will oversee the Department of Higher Education until a regular appointee is named or further instructions are issued.
Kumar’s administrative career includes a significant focus on the education sector. Before his current roles, he served as the Secretary of Youth Affairs and held the position of principal secretary for education in Bihar, where he played a pivotal role in steering state-level education policies.
This development comes at a crucial time for the higher education sector, which is undergoing significant reforms aligned with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. Experts believe the dual role of Kumar could provide continuity in addressing overlapping challenges within school and higher education systems.
However, stakeholders have raised concerns over the strain of dual responsibilities on a single official. With major initiatives like improving higher education accessibility and digital transformation in the pipeline, Kumar’s appointment is expected to play a key role in driving these agendas forward.
The Department of Higher Education, a critical wing of the Ministry of Education, oversees policies and schemes impacting universities, colleges, and research institutions nationwide. Observers will be keen to see how Kumar balances this expanded mandate in the coming months.
This interim arrangement is indicative of the government’s approach to ensuring leadership stability in key education departments during a period of policy implementation and structural changes.
