New Delhi: India’s 5G rollout has achieved significant milestones, with services now operational in 779 out of 783 districts, according to government data. Since the technology’s launch on October 1, 2022, over 4.6 lakh 5G Base Transceiver Stations (BTSs) have been installed nationwide, highlighting India’s progress in digital infrastructure development.
Spectrum Auction and Policy Reforms Accelerate Rollout
The nationwide deployment followed the August 2022 spectrum auction, enabling telecom service providers (TSPs) to acquire the necessary frequencies. Key government initiatives have supported the rollout:
- AGR Rationalization: Adjusted Gross Revenue reforms and reduced bank guarantees have eased financial burdens on telecom operators.
- Spectrum Efficiency: Policies for sharing, trading, and surrendering spectrum have been implemented to maximize resource use.
- Streamlined Approvals: Changes in the Telecommunications (Right of Way) Rules and simplified clearance processes for telecom infrastructure have expedited installations.
The PM GatiShakti Sanchar portal has also facilitated faster approvals for infrastructure projects, including street furniture usage for deploying small cells.
Impact on Industries and Economy
With 5G services available in almost all districts, sectors such as healthcare, education, manufacturing, and agriculture stand to benefit from improved connectivity. Enhanced network capabilities are expected to boost productivity, enable innovation, and drive economic growth. The government aims to bring 5G services to all states and Union Territories. Telecom operators have already exceeded the minimum rollout requirements outlined during the spectrum auction, underscoring India’s commitment to rapid digital transformation. The focus now shifts to bridging the digital divide by ensuring 5G accessibility in rural and remote areas. Experts highlight the need for robust cybersecurity measures to secure this expanding digital ecosystem.
