New Delhi: Bhuvnesh Kumar, a 1995-batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer from the Uttar Pradesh cadre, has been appointed as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI).
Kumar officially assumed charge this week, bringing with him an illustrious career spanning pivotal roles in both the central government and his cadre state.
An alumnus and gold medalist of the National Institute of Technology (NIT), Kurukshetra, Kumar has held several significant positions, showcasing his expertise in governance and administration.
At the Centre, he serves as an Additional Secretary in the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), a role he will continue to hold alongside his responsibilities as CEO of UIDAI. Previously, he served as Joint Secretary in MeitY, further deepening his engagement with India’s digital governance initiatives.
In Uttar Pradesh, Kumar’s extensive portfolio includes serving as Principal Secretary in the Department of Animal Husbandry, Dairy Development, and Fisheries. He has also held key positions as Secretary Finance, Secretary MSME, Secretary Technical Education, and Divisional Commissioner for the Department of Land Revenue.
Additionally, Kumar has overseen departments such as Sports and Youth Welfare, Planning, and Vocational Education, further highlighting his versatile leadership across diverse domains.
Kumar succeeds Amit Agrawal, a 1993-batch IAS officer of the Chhattisgarh cadre. Agrawal, an IIT Kanpur graduate, had been at the helm of UIDAI since June 2023, following the retirement of Saurabh Garg. His tenure was extended by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet in November 2023, culminating in Kumar’s recent appointment.
As CEO of UIDAI, Kumar will oversee the implementation and expansion of Aadhaar, India’s unique identification system, which plays a critical role in delivering services and benefits to citizens efficiently and securely.
