Chennai: Union Minister of Electronics and Information Technology, Railways, and Information & Broadcasting, Ashwini Vaishnaw, inaugurated Syrma SGS’s state-of-the-art laptop assembly line in Chennai.

Located in the Madras Export Processing Zone (MEPZ), the facility is a significant step towards bolstering India’s position in IT hardware manufacturing.

— Ashwini Vaishnaw (@AshwiniVaishnaw) January 10, 2025

A Milestone in India’s Manufacturing Journey

Syrma SGS, a company under the PLI 2.0 scheme for IT hardware, has partnered with the Taiwanese technology giant Micro-Star International (MSI) to manufacture laptops.

This initiative marks a strategic transition for India from being a global leader in mobile phone manufacturing to making inroads into high-value IT hardware production. The facility underscores India’s commitment to reducing dependency on imports and achieving self-reliance in cutting-edge IT hardware.

Key Features of the New Facility

  • Global Collaboration: The partnership with MSI, a global leader in gaming and AI PCs, demonstrates India’s ability to attract international players to invest in the domestic market.
  • Production Capacity: The Chennai facility will initially produce 100,000 laptops annually, with plans to scale up to one million units per year within the next 1-2 years, depending on market demand.
  • Job Creation: The expansion is expected to create 150-200 additional jobs by FY26, contributing to regional economic development.
  • High-Quality Standards: The facility highlights India’s capability to produce world-class laptops that meet global standards, reinforcing its position in the global IT supply chain.

Shifting Gear from Mobile Phones to Laptops

The inauguration of the Syrma SGS laptop assembly line is a crucial step in realizing the vision of ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ (self-reliant India). With support from the government’s PLI 2.0 scheme, which incentivizes the production of high-value IT products, this initiative is set to position India as a global hub for IT hardware manufacturing.

The facility will not only cater to domestic demand but also strengthen India’s role in the international market, diversifying the country’s electronics manufacturing ecosystem.

MSI Selects Syrma SGS for ‘Make in India’ Laptops

Syrma SGS Technology Limited, a leader in electronics systems design and manufacturing, has partnered with MSI to assemble laptops for the Indian market. This strategic collaboration marks the beginning of a phased approach to localizing MSI’s manufacturing in India. Backed by technology transfer and best practices from MSI, the facility will leverage Syrma SGS’s scalable and high-quality manufacturing processes to produce laptops that meet the growing demands of Indian consumers.

John Hung, India NB General Manager from MSI, remarked, “India has always been a key market for MSI. Our partnership with Syrma SGS is a significant step forward in our ‘Make in India’ initiative, bringing our fan-favourite laptops closer to Indian consumers. This collaboration reflects our shared commitment to innovation, quality, and strengthening India’s manufacturing ecosystem.”

Satendra Singh, CEO of Syrma SGS Technology Limited, stated, “This collaboration with MSI underscores our commitment to the ‘Make in India’ initiative and highlights our ability to deliver high-quality, innovative solutions for global leaders. Together, we aim to bring cutting-edge, locally produced laptops to Indian consumers while setting new benchmarks in quality and innovation.”

Boosting India’s Manufacturing Ecosystem

With over four decades of experience, Syrma SGS has established itself as a trusted name in IT hardware manufacturing, offering a diverse portfolio that includes memory, SSDs, motherboards, power adapters, and full systems integration. The collaboration with MSI further solidifies Syrma SGS’s position as a key player in India’s electronics manufacturing landscape.

The move aligns with the government’s proactive efforts to promote local laptop manufacturing through policy and strategic initiatives. It also addresses the growing opportunities in India’s expanding IT hardware market, ensuring that globally competitive, locally produced laptops reach Indian consumers.

This partnership between Syrma SGS and MSI is expected to drive innovation, create jobs, and reinforce India’s status as a global hub for electronics manufacturing, contributing significantly to the nation’s economic growth.
