Mumbai: Vodafone has successfully conducted the world’s first satellite video call using standard 4G/5G smartphones, eliminating the need for specialized satellite phones or additional equipment. This breakthrough will enable users in remote areas with no mobile coverage to make and receive video calls, access the Internet, and use online messaging services seamlessly. The innovation, developed in collaboration with AST SpaceMobile, is designed to offer a full mobile broadband experience, closing gaps in global mobile coverage.
Next-Gen Mobile Networks Without Additional Equipment
Unlike traditional satellite-based services that require dedicated satellite phones or terminals, Vodafone’s new technology allows users to connect to space-based networks using their everyday smartphones. The transition between terrestrial and satellite networks happens automatically, making it a seamless experience comparable to existing 4G and 5G mobile networks. This marks a major advancement in universal digital connectivity and paves the way for next-generation mobile communication.
A Historic Call from a Remote Location
Vodafone engineer Rowan Chesmer demonstrated the new technology by making the historic satellite video call from a mountainous region in mid-Wales, an area previously without mobile broadband. This successful test highlighted the potential of the technology to provide connectivity in regions where traditional network infrastructure is unavailable.
The call was received at Vodafone’s new space-to-land gateway, which channels signals from users’ smartphones via AST SpaceMobile’s BlueBird satellites. The achievement represents a significant step forward in global telecommunications, bringing reliable connectivity to underserved regions and redefining the possibilities of mobile networking.
