New Delhi: Indian Air Force (IAF) Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla is set to make history as the first Indian astronaut to travel to the International Space Station (ISS). He will embark on this journey aboard a SpaceX Dragon spacecraft from Florida as part of the Axiom Mission 4 (Ax-4), a collaboration between NASA and the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). The mission is scheduled for launch no earlier than the spring of 2025, as announced by NASA.
Shukla, who has been designated as the pilot for the Ax-4 mission, expressed his excitement about representing India in space. He stated that he looks forward to sharing his experiences with fellow Indians and plans to take items symbolizing India on his spaceflight.
A Distinguished Career in the Indian Air Force
Born on 10 October, 1985, in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, Shubhanshu Shukla has had an illustrious career in the IAF. He was commissioned into the fighter wing of the IAF in June 2006 and has since accumulated 2,000 hours of flight experience across various aircraft, including the Su-30 MKI, MiG-21, MiG-29, Jaguar, Hawk, Dornier, and An-32.
Recognized as a combat leader and seasoned test pilot, Shukla was promoted to the rank of Group Captain in March 2024. His expertise in aviation and operational experience made him a prime candidate for space missions. In addition to the Ax-4 mission, he has also been designated as an astronaut for India’s own human spaceflight program, Gaganyaan.
Shukla’s journey to space began in 2019 when he was selected by ISRO for astronaut training. He underwent intensive training at the Yuri Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center in Star City, Moscow, preparing for space missions through a year-long program that shaped his skills and readiness for space travel.
What is the Axiom Mission 4?
Axiom Mission 4 is a significant milestone in global space exploration. The mission, apart from representing India, will also mark the return of human spaceflight for Poland and Hungary. This will be the first time that astronauts from all three countries will undertake a mission aboard the ISS.
Former NASA astronaut and Axiom Space’s Director of Human Spaceflight, Peggy Whitson, will command the commercial mission, while Shukla will serve as the mission pilot. The two mission specialists will be European Space Agency project astronaut Slawosz Uznanski-Wisniewski of Poland and Tibor Kapu of Hungary.
The astronauts plan to spend up to 14 days aboard the ISS, where they will conduct various scientific experiments, outreach programs, and commercial activities, further strengthening global collaboration in space exploration.
India’s Expanding Presence in Space
Shukla’s participation in the Ax-4 mission marks a new chapter in India’s space endeavors. He will be the second Indian astronaut to travel to space, following Rakesh Sharma, who flew aboard the Soviet Soyuz T-11 mission in 1984.
As India continues to make strides in space exploration, missions like Ax-4 and Gaganyaan are expected to elevate the nation’s contributions to human spaceflight and inspire future generations of Indian astronauts.
