West Bengal currently tops in India in the MSME sector with 660 MSME hubs spread across the state.
More than 90 lakh MSMEs have generated 1.60 crore employment across the state. Of these 29 lakh MSMEs are currently owned by women. The MSME industry and services sector alone is contributing to nearly 81% of the state GDP.
Accordingly, 7 new MoUs involving the MSME ecosystem were signed during the Bengal Global Business Summit.
7 new Textile units are set to come up in Hooghly, Nadia and North 24 Parganas. The Ramniwas Group is setting up 3 industrial parks in North Bengal investing Rs 1300 crore which will create 15,500 employment.
As a consequence, India Post had evinced interest in transferring goods and supplies for this significant MSME community. This was informed by the Chief Postmaster General (West Bengal Circle) Ashok Kumar.
“There are 1.65 lakh post offices across the country, with every single Gram Panchayat having at least 1 Post Office. We would be extremely glad to cater to this huge community of MSMEs who can leverage our huge network to transfer parcels,” he added.
With leather being one of the important MSME constituents, the Council For Leather Exports plans to generate another 4 lakh employment across the state by 2026.
“Currently 5 lakh people are employed in 500 tanneries in the Bantala Leather Complex. Another 450 tanneries are coming up by next year that will generate 4 lakh more jobs,” informed Council Vice Chairman Ramesh Juneja.
