New Delhi: Tesla has started hiring in India, signaling a potential entry into the market as policy changes make expansion more feasible. The electric vehicle (EV) maker has posted job openings for 13 roles, including customer engagement, service, and delivery operations positions.
These roles are primarily based in Mumbai and Delhi, according to Tesla’s LinkedIn listings.
India’s Import Duty Reduction Could Boost Tesla’s Prospects
For years, Tesla has hesitated to enter India due to high import duties, which made its vehicles significantly more expensive.
However, the Indian government recently lowered the basic customs duty on high-end cars priced above $40,000 from 110 per cent to 70 per cent. This policy shift aligns with the company’s renewed interest in the market.
Tesla Eyes India Amid Global Sales Challenges
Tesla’s move comes at a time when its global EV sales are slowing. The company recently reported its first annual decline in EV sales in over a decade.
While India’s EV market is still in its early stages, with around 100,000 electric cars sold last year compared to China’s 11 million, it presents an opportunity for Tesla to diversify its sales.
Musk’s India Visit and Policy Discussions
Tesla’s hiring push follows CEO Elon Musk’s meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the US. Discussions reportedly included trade negotiations and potential defense deals between India and the US.
Meanwhile, Musk’s involvement in various international policy discussions, including Italy’s potential collaboration with SpaceX for secure communications, highlights his growing influence beyond the corporate sector.
Tesla has not yet announced an official launch date for its vehicles in India, but its hiring spree indicates preparations for a larger presence in the country.
