Five Renewable Energy Startups Driving India's Green Economy

Renewable energy startups in India are driving the nation’s transition to sustainable power by leveraging cutting-edge technologies and innovation. With a focus on AI, hydrogen, bioenergy, robotics, and advanced battery solutions, these startups are playing a pivotal role in shaping India’s green economy and advancing toward the renewable energy targets.

By collaborating with technology firms and securing investments in cleantech, these ventures are enhancing the efficiency and affordability of renewable energy adoption. Their efforts are also addressing key challenges such as the intermittency of solar and wind power, enabling stable grid integration, reducing energy costs, and strengthening the overall economics of renewable energy. As India accelerates its clean energy transition, these startups are at the forefront of building a more sustainable and resilient energy landscape.

India’s renewable energy sector is witnessing rapid growth, with startups playing a crucial role in accelerating the transition towards sustainable energy solutions. With the country aiming to achieve net-zero emissions by 2070, innovative companies are developing cutting-edge technologies to address energy challenges and reduce dependency on fossil fuels.

APAC Media’s 3rd Edition National Sustainable Energy Innovation Conclave in Chhattisgarh is around the corner. As India accelerates its transition toward sustainable energy, startups are playing a pivotal role in addressing challenges and developing cutting-edge solutions. Here, we profile five leading renewable energy startups that are driving India’s green economy through groundbreaking initiatives in solar, wind, biogas, battery storage, and energy efficiency.

1. Ecozen Solutions: Revolutionizing Agri-Tech with Solar Energy

Ecozen Solutions is at the forefront of India’s renewable energy revolution, particularly in the agri-tech sector. Founded by IIT Kharagpur alumni Devendra Gupta, Prateek Singhal, and Vivek Pandey, the company focuses on leveraging solar energy to enhance agricultural productivity. Ecozen offers innovative solutions such as solar-powered irrigation systems and cold storage units, helping farmers reduce post-harvest losses while promoting sustainability.

The startup’s technology-driven approach combines data analytics, AI, and IoT to create energy-efficient solutions tailored to the unique needs of Indian agriculture. With a vision to disrupt the perishables supply chain, Ecozen has played a crucial role in reducing carbon footprints while empowering rural farmers with clean energy alternatives.

2. GPS Renewables: Pioneering Waste-to-Energy Solutions

Founded in 2012 by IIM-Bangalore graduates Mainak Chakraborty and Sreekrishna Sankar, GPS Renewables specializes in biogas and waste-to-energy solutions. The company’s flagship product, BioUrja, is one of the most efficient biogas technologies available, helping businesses convert organic waste into clean energy.

GPS Renewables has successfully deployed over 100 BioUrja units across hotels, technology parks, corporate offices, and hospitals, making significant strides in decentralized energy generation. By addressing the growing issue of organic waste management, the startup is not only reducing environmental pollution but also contributing to India’s ambitious renewable energy targets.

3. Ecofy: Financing the Green Transition

Ecofy is a unique player in India’s clean energy sector, operating as a green-only non-banking financial company (NBFC). Co-founded by Rajashree Nambiar and Govind Sankaranarayanan, the company supports individuals and businesses looking to adopt renewable energy solutions by providing financial assistance tailored to green initiatives.

Backed by Eversource Capital, Ecofy focuses on accelerating the shift towards a low-carbon economy. The startup finances solar and wind energy projects, helping customers transition to sustainable energy while promoting climate resilience. With its commitment to reducing the carbon footprint, Ecofy is playing a key role in making green energy solutions accessible and affordable across India.

4. Lohum: Advancing Battery Technology for a Sustainable Future

Lohum is a major innovator in India’s clean energy landscape, specializing in battery technology and energy storage solutions. Founded in 2018, the company is the only integrated lithium-ion battery manufacturer and recycler in the country. CEO Rajat Verma leads Lohum’s mission to create a circular economy for battery materials, ensuring they can be reused and recycled indefinitely.

With the rise of electric vehicles (EVs) and renewable energy storage systems, Lohum’s sustainable battery solutions are helping reduce India’s dependence on imported raw materials while lowering the overall cost of electrification. By focusing on low-carbon refining and battery material reuse, Lohum is addressing critical challenges in the energy transition and supporting the country’s push towards clean mobility.

5. ReNew Power: Leading the Charge in Utility-Scale Renewable Projects

Founded by Sumant Sinha in 2011, ReNew Power is one of India’s largest renewable energy companies, with a portfolio exceeding 10.3 GW of commissioned and pipeline projects. The company is a pioneer in wind, solar, and hydro power generation, driving large-scale renewable energy adoption across the country.

ReNew Power has been instrumental in setting industry benchmarks, becoming the first Indian renewable energy company to cross 5 GW of installed capacity in 2019. The company has also played a crucial role in global collaborations, partnering with Korean giant GSE&C and establishing research initiatives with IIT Delhi. With its commitment to decarbonization, ReNew Power continues to be a dominant force in India’s clean energy transition.

India’s renewable energy startups are at the forefront of the country’s transition to a sustainable future. Companies such as Ecozen Solutions, GPS Renewables, Ecofy, Lohum, and ReNew Power are driving innovation across sectors, from solar-powered agri-tech and biogas solutions to battery recycling and large-scale wind and solar projects. As India advances towards its climate goals, these firms are set to play a crucial role in shaping a cleaner and more sustainable energy landscape.
