New Delhi: The Delhi Metro Yellow Line extension has received in-principle approval from the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA).
The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) is working to improve connectivity throughout Delhi and the surrounding areas of Uttar Pradesh and Haryana by expanding the metro network.
Often referred to as the capital’s lifeline, the Delhi Metro is the nation’s longest metro system, spanning 395 km with 12 lines and 289 stations, including the Rapid Metro Gurugram and the Noida-Greater Noida Aqua Line.
With 37 stations, including important interchanges like Kashmere Gate, Rajiv Chowk, and Hauz Khas, the Yellow Line currently connects Samaypur Badli and Millennium City Centre Gurugram over a distance of 47.2 km.
The proposed expansion will extend the Yellow Line from Samaypur Badli to Sonipat via Nathupur. This was confirmed in a written response by Minister of State for Housing and Urban Affairs Tokhan Sahu during a Lok Sabha session. The statement was made in response to a query regarding the proposed extension from Samaypur Badli to Narela.
Through initiatives like the National Urban Transport Policy (NUTP), 2006, the Metro Rail Policy, 2017, and the Transit-Orientated Development Policy, 2017, the minister also emphasised the government’s dedication to the development of urban transport. State governments and union territories can use these policies as a guide when planning and carrying out urban transport projects.
He added that whenever state governments or union territories submit proposals, the federal government will fund urban rail projects based on resource availability and feasibility studies.
It is anticipated that the Yellow Line’s extension will improve commuter connectivity in northern Delhi and Haryana, making travel easier and easing traffic in these areas. A detailed project report (DPR) for the suggested extension will now be prepared by the DMRC.
