Darjeeling: The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (DHR) has planned to give the 143-year-old Darjeeling railway station a facelift encompassing modern facilities while maintaining its architectural heritage.
An agency registered with the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has been tasked with preparing a detailed project report (DPR) that would ensure the Darjeeling railway station’s authenticity is maintained. The process of finalising the DPR is currently in progress.
With construction beginning in 1879 and operations commencing in 1881, the restoration plan for the Darjeeling station prioritises recreating its original Art Deco facade with historical accuracy.
The new restoration will incorporate all modern facilities, ensuring that architectural heritage and contemporary functionality blend. There will be better integration of necessary modern upgrades.
UNESCO declared DHR a world heritage site in 1999, and this year it is celebrating 25 years of that heritage status. On the occasion of World Heritage Day, DHR conducted a special joy ride for school children.
