Jaisalmer: ReNew has commissioned its 1.3 gigawatt peak (GWp) solar power project in Jaisalmer, Rajasthan, marking one of the largest single-location solar installations in the country.
The solar power project, which spans approximately 3,500 acres across villages in Pokran and Bhaniyana tehsils, is expected to generate around 2,490 million units of electricity annually.
90 per cent of Panels Made in Rajasthan
A key feature of the project is its emphasis on domestic manufacturing. ReNew used 100 per cent Made-in-India solar panels, with 90 per cent of them produced at its Jaipur-based manufacturing facility. This aligns with the central government’s Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative, which promotes local production to reduce import dependency in critical sectors like energy.
Power Supply at Rs 2.18/kWh
The electricity generated will be supplied to consumers in Rajasthan at a competitive tariff of Rs 2.18 per kilowatt-hour (kWh), making it one of the lower-cost clean energy supplies in the region. The project is projected to meet the power needs of nearly five lakh households.
Environmental Impact and Local Participation
In terms of environmental benefits, the solar plant is expected to offset approximately 2.3 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions annually. Additionally, the project has enabled landowners to lease uncultivated land for the next 25 years, ensuring a stable source of income for local communities.
Government’s Push Towards Energy Self-Sufficiency
The inauguration, attended by Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi and Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma, comes as part of a broader effort to scale renewable energy capacity in India. Government representatives highlighted the state’s strategic role in the national energy transition plan.
ReNew’s Founder and CEO, Sumant Sinha, noted that Rajasthan continues to play a central role in the company’s renewable energy portfolio, with about 5 GW of operational capacity and over Rs 21,000 crore invested in the state.
The development is seen as part of India’s ongoing push to increase its renewable energy capacity while reducing reliance on fossil fuels.
