Kolkata: The Kolkata Police plans to purchase over 100 contactless breath analysers for all its police stations across the city to strengthen the anti-drunk driving checks.
Used to check for rising drunk driving inside the city, Kolkata Police embarked on this initiative at an expenditure of over Rs 35 lakh. While it has already acquired 50 such breath analysers, the remaining will be procured this week only.
Currently, there is one contactless breath analyzer for every 10 divisions associated with the Kolkata Police Traffic Department. This is not proving sufficient as cases of drunken driving are increasing.
That is why a contactless breath analyzer is being given to each police station so that they can start the campaign with more rigour.
The contactless breath analysers were introduced to the 26 Traffic Guards last year only. The earlier breath analysers required the pipes to be touched to the driver’s mouth, which many people were complaining against for hygienic purposes.
The contactless breath analyzer, however, can determine the alcohol level if a driver just blows mouth in front of it.
Currently primarily the Kolkata Traffic Police Guards carry out this campaign against drunken driving. On average, 30-40 cases are registered daily.
Sometimes, the police stations and traffic guards carry out these exercises jointly, too. However, even then, it was primarily the traffic police who used these contactless breath analysers.
With this new procurement, the devices will be handed over to the police stations. This will intensify the campaign as the police stations can conduct inspections jointly or individually as per requirement.
