New Delhi: The Union Home Ministry has created a new provision for filing e-zero FIRs from anywhere in the world for cybercrimes involving in excess of Rs 10 lakhs.
This e-zero FIR could be filed through the National Cyber Crime Reporting portal or through the phone number 1930. Apart from increasing awareness, this could also help in quicker recovery of money.
The Indian Cybercrime Co-Ordination Centre or I4C, will be responsible for reducing the growing number of cybercrimes in the country.
The I4C is a repository of digital crimes across the country. Now, new features are being added to the portal.
Till now, digital complaints have been filed from different areas only through the reporting portal. But the investigation never started immediately.
Instead, complaints were registered with the respective investigation agencies or the police based on the digital complaints. Lots of time was spent on this, and often, the stolen money trail could not be blocked immediately.
The criminals used to take the money out of banks or ATMs during this time. E-Zero will help I4C address this lacuna.
Zero FIRs are used to capture criminals involved in severe crimes irrespective of location. These are typically used for rape, molestation, women and children trafficking.
In case of e-zero FIRs, police will have to file the FIRs online only, irrespective of time or location.
Earlier, complainants had to pick up these FIRs from police stations or cyber cells. Now, for Indians, the complaints will be registered in Delhi Police’s e-FIR system.
Within 24 hours, the IO has to accept these complaints online and issue and FIR number. Inspector-level officials will be involved in this.
