Kolkata: The Kolkata Police Traffic Guard Headquarters has started installing blind spot detection mirrors in Kolkata buses to prevent fatal accidents.
Most road accidents in Kolkata happen due to three reasons. First, many passengers try to board and alight from running buses and they often lose balance and get hurt by the back wheel.
Secondly, two-wheelers often try to overtake buses from the wrong side. And lastly, pedestrians often cross roads from the left side dangerously. Blind spot detection mirrors can prevent all these accidents.
Last week, 30 such mirrors were installed in buses in Dalhousie. Within May, the Traffic Police will install 270 more such bus mirrors on different routes.
Each Traffic Guard has been instructed to send the adequate number of blind spot detection mirrors as per the bus route requirements.
In each Traffic Guard, one inspector and two sergeants have been entrusted with the responsibility.
The police have been instructed to complete the installation as soon as possible, and after that, send a report as to whether it has helped in reducing accidents.
Till April this year, 28 per cent of these fatal accidents have happened because of blind spots.
