Kolkata: The Kolkata Port is proposing to repurpose three floating ships to offer new opportunities in culture, leisure and tourism.
The Syama Prasad Mukherjee Port plans to repurpose P L Rupsa, P L Hooghly and P L Gopal into creating new opportunities for hospitality brands, tourism operators and other innovators along the Hooghly river.
These vessels will henceforth be converted into cafes, museums and public attractions.
P L Rupsa and P L Hooghly were built in 1997 and offer 1000-2000 sq ft of usable space with a capacity for 50-100 guests.
P L Gopal, built in 1994, offers 800-1000 sq ft usable space and is suitable for 30-50 guests.
The project aims at reimagining Kolkata’s riverfront by merging tradition with innovation. These floating landmarks will become milestones for sustainable tourism.
The port will offer free berthing at the Kolkata Dock System for retrofitting, along with complimentary jetty space for passenger and staff movement during operations.
These projects were inspired by the success of the Bengal Paddle venture that preserves maritime history while enhancing community participation.
