New Delhi: ABB India, a global technology company working on electrification and automation, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL) to drive digital transformation at the Rourkela Steel Plant in Odisha.
This partnership between ABB India and SAIL aims to optimise ironmaking and steelmaking processes using advanced data analytics and digital twin technologies.
As part of the MoU, SAIL’s Rourkela plant will share operational data with ABB, which it will use to develop data-based models of the plant’s blast furnaces and basic oxygen furnaces. These models will act as digital twins, enabling real-time monitoring, predictive insights, and enhanced process efficiency.
Addressing Industry Challenges
The collaboration comes amid rising pressures on the global steel industry to meet stricter environmental norms, reduce operational costs and boost competitiveness.
Rourkela Steel Plant produced 4.08 million tons of saleable steel in FY 2024–25, with plans to ramp up output to nine million tons by 2030.
Driving Efficiency and Sustainability
The project will leverage ABB’s expertise in automation and digitalisation to deliver data-driven insights for improving operational decision-making.
The initiative is expected to significantly enhance sustainability, resource optimisation, and cost-effectiveness, setting a new benchmark for digital steel manufacturing in India.
