Chennai: The World Bank Group (WBG) has reopened its updated Global Business Centre (GBC) in Taramani, Chennai, reaffirming its longstanding dedication to operational excellence and innovation. Originally established in 2001, the centre is currently the WBG’s largest location outside of its headquarters in Washington, D.C.
Wencai Zhang, Managing Director and Chief Administrative Officer of the World Bank Group, visited Chennai for the reopening ceremony and praised the city’s contributions to the Group’s global operations. “Chennai stands for operational excellence and innovation,” said Zhang, adding that “It was chosen after a rigorous global search and continues to deliver outstanding value.”
As of March 2025, the Chennai centre, which began with just 70 personnel, has grown to over 1,500, serving the World Bank’s operations in 189 member nations through 130 global locations. Zhang stated that the main justifications for founding and growing the centre were Chennai’s rich talent pool, strong infrastructure, stable government and excellent standard of living.
The GBC offers essential business services in a number of areas, including administration, risk management, IT, treasury, finance, procurement and more. Zhang highlighted the centre’s groundbreaking efforts in digital innovation and process automation and he revealed that the World Bank believes Chennai has the potential to play a bigger role in data analytics and AI-based decision assistance in the future.
With $4.7 billion in completed projects and another $1 billion in ongoing implementation, Tamil Nadu has been a significant World Bank partner. Zhang also emphasised the success of the Chennai GBC as a model for the 2019 opening of the WBG’s Sofia, Bulgaria, centre.
“We are very confident in Chennai’s future as a global hub for business services,” said Zhang, adding that “With excellent support from the State and Central governments, Tamil Nadu has created a thriving, business-friendly environment for international companies.”
