New Delhi: India is pursuing a pro-innovation approach to Artificial Intelligence, with an emphasis on building responsible, safe, and impactful applications for everyday citizens, said Abhishek Singh, IAS, CEO of IndiaAI Mission and Additional Secretary at the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), on 3 June.
Speaking at the fifth and final Stakeholder Consultation on the AI Readiness Assessment Methodology (RAM), Singh underscored the government’s “light-touch regulation” stance designed to foster innovation while minimising user harm.
The consultation, which marked the culmination of a nationwide series, was aimed at contextualising the UNESCO-developed RAM framework for India’s diverse AI landscape.
“Our strategy is simple, build AI in India, make AI work for India, and ensure the applications are truly responsible and trustworthy,” Singh said. He highlighted the government’s inclusive consultative process, which engaged stakeholders in cities such as Guwahati, Hyderabad, and Bengaluru to tailor the methodology to local realities.
A core focus, Singh noted, is the development of AI tools that serve real-world needs, particularly in critical sectors like healthcare and agriculture. “High-end compute and language APIs are important, but ultimately, solutions must be fair, ethical, and address ground-level challenges,” he said.
The IndiaAI Mission CEO also emphasised the growing capabilities of Indian startups working on foundational models and the country’s increasing investment in AI compute infrastructure.
However, he stressed the urgency of moving beyond dialogues to real-world implementation.
“We are developing tools to detect bias, identify deepfakes, and watermark AI-generated content. The time has come to align the ecosystem towards responsible deployment,” he added.
The stakeholder consultation series is part of India’s broader efforts to ensure AI readiness that is inclusive, ethical, and focused on long-term social benefit.
