Kolkata: Kolkata is soon to get semiconductor companies in the city. Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee discussed these emerging opportunities in this sector with Kathy Giles-Diaz, Consul General at the US Consulate General in Kolkata.
One of the world’s largest semiconductor companies, GlobalFoundries, is setting up a fab-less centre for design and testing at the Kolkata Power Centre in Sector V, Salt Lake.
The government has already allotted 13,000 sq ft. space at the STPI IT Park in Sector V, Salt Lake to GlobalFoundries for this purpose. They have requested another 19000 sq ft area and this allocation process is currently underway.
The government is working closely with GlobalFoundries as well as startups, academia and other industry stakeholders to develop a comprehensive power ecosystem in Bengal.
There are plans for joint internship programs with multiple universities to nurture and foster a semiconductor talent pool.
The New Jersey-based Santech Global Inc. is also keen to set up a centre on semiconductors and nanoelectronics in Kolkata. The requisite discussions and currently taking place.
Both these initiatives could help build a robust semiconductor ecosystem in Bengal. Accordingly, the government is in the final stages of drafting the Global Capability Centre (GCC) Policy for West Bengal.
Armed with the GCC Policy and with semiconductor and nanoelectronics hubs in place, West Bengal could consolidate its position as a hub of next-generation technology and innovation.
