Itanagar: The Hydro Power Development Corporation of Arunachal Pradesh (HPDCAPL) has secured verified carbon credits for its 3 MW small hydro project located at Zemithang in Tawang district.
This makes HPDCAPL the first power corporation from the Northeast to successfully enter the voluntary carbon credit market.
This makes it a landmark milestone in India’s green energy sector and also sets a benchmark for the region’s climate action efforts.
The Universal Carbon Registry (UCR) validated and issued the carbon credits for FY2022-23 in collaboration with Creduce Technologies.
The Zemithang hydro project is powered by two 1.5MW Pelton turbine generators. As of mid-2023, the hydro project has generated 16,326 tonnes of carbon credits, with projections targeting 97,783 tonnes by 2028.
HPDCAPL signed an MoU with Ahmedabad-based Creduce Technologies in 2021. Creduce is one of India’s largest advisory firms in thr renewable and carbon credit space.
HPDCAPL has conducted a sensitisation program on carbon neutrality earlier. It is positioning itself as a frontrunner in green energy innovation and carbon credit trading from the northeast.
