Kaalyani: The Kalyani District Court in West Bengal yesterday sentenced nine persons in India’s first conviction in a digital arrest case.
The case involved frauds of over Rs 1 crore. Earlier, the Ranaghat Police District Cyber Department arrested 13 people from Maharashtra, Haryana, Gujarat and Rajasthan.
The frauds called from Dubai and Cambodia numbers and digitally arrested a retired professor from Kalyani by posing as Mumbai Police officials
They vanished with Rs 1.10 crore and distributed the amount to 100 bank accounts.
The victim complained on 13 November, following which an SIT was formed by the Cyber Police Station.
In the next 31 days, 13 people were arrested from Maharashtra, Haryana, Gujarat and Rajasthan. Mobiles, passbooks, cheque books, PAN cards and Rs 4.5 lakhs were recovered from them.
The police filed a 2600-page chargesheet and produced 29 witnesses. As a result, Kalyani has earned its place in India’s cybercrime investigation map.
This same circle has committed fraud worth Rs 400 crore in nearly 100 cyber crimes across the country.
With India’s first digital arrest conviction, hopefully, such crimes will soon be nipped in the bud.
