New Delhi: The Union Cabinet on 12 August approved a bill to establish an Indian Institute of Management (IIM) in Guwahati, making it the second IIM in the Northeast after IIM Shillong, set up in 2007 and the 22nd such institute in the country.
Senior government officials reportedly confirmed that the Centre has earmarked over Rs 500 crore for the project.
The addition of the IIM is expected to bolster further Guwahati’s status as a leading educational hub in the region, which already hosts premier institutions such as IIT Guwahati, the National Law University and Judicial Academy and AIIMS Changsari.
Officials noted that the institute will address a long-pending gap in management education in the Northeast, offering advanced academic programmes and research opportunities to students nationwide. Its presence is projected to attract skilled faculty, promote entrepreneurship and build capacity in key sectors, driving regional and national economic growth.
The move is part of a larger push by the Centre to strengthen higher education infrastructure in the Northeast, a region that has recently seen the establishment of new central universities, AIIMS campuses and specialised research facilities.
Officials said the initiative aims to reduce regional disparities in access to elite institutions, enhance employability and connect the Northeast more closely with national and global economic networks. The bill to establish the new IIM is expected to be tabled in Parliament during the ongoing session.
