Kolkata: The West Bengal government has decided to set up a multi-modal transport hub at Esplanade in Kolkata.
The Kolkata Police has also decided to set up a Control Command Post at Metro Channel in Esplanade.
Being the central business district of the city, Esplanade is already a busy thoroughfare. Now that Esplanade is becoming the common connecting point for three different Metro lines, this crowd is expected to grow even further.
While the Kavi Subhash– Dakshineshwar line is already running, East-West Metro will start its complete run this month and Joka-Esplanade will be completed in two years.
In addition, the spot is the favourite for all sorts of public protests. In the last 5 years, 498 political protests have taken place at Esplanade.
The government has already appointed RITES to conduct the due diligence for the multi-modal transport hub.
This hub will have basement parking facilities as well as waiting rooms for buses and underpasses.
For the police command centre, Kolkata Police has already requested the Transport Department for 9540 sq ft space.
The centre will have room provisions for the Deputy Commissioner, 2 OCs, officers’ room, barracks for lady police, among others.
