Shilong: Seeing as one of the biggest political shake-ups of the current term, eight of the 12 ministers in the Meghalaya Cabinet were replaced on 16 September, with Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma inducting eight new members while retaining the coalition’s power balance.
Only Sangma, his two deputies, Prestone Tynsong and Sniawbhalang Dhar, and Housing and Public Health Engineering Minister Marcuise Marak have kept their portfolios. All four belong to the National People’s Party (NPP), which heads the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA 2.0) government supported by the BJP, United Democratic Party (UDP) and Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP).
At the swearing-in ceremony of the newly appointed Cabinet Ministers, presided over by Hon’ble Governor Shri C.H. Vijayashankar ji at Raj Bhavan, Shillong.

The reshuffle, coming midway through the government’s five-year term, saw several high-profile exits. NPP ministers Ampareen Lyngdoh, Abu Taher Mondal, Rakkam Sangma and Coming One Ymbon were dropped. Four NPP legislators, Timothy Shira, Wailadmiki Shylla, Brening Sangma and Sosthenes Sohtun, have joined the Meghalaya Cabinet in their place.
Alliance partners also witnessed changes. BJP’s Alexander Laloo Hek was replaced by fellow party MLA Sanbor Shullai. The UDP removed ministers Paul Lyngdoh and Kyrmen Shylla, bringing in Metbah Lyngdoh and Lahkmen Rymbui. HSPDP’s Shakliar Warjiri made way for Methodius Dkhar.
Sangma said the move aimed to reflect “regional and district aspirations” and accommodate the alliance’s broad base of over 50 MLAs in the 60-member Assembly. Despite the NPP now commanding a majority of 33 seats after defections from the Congress, the chief minister stressed that coalition promises made in 2023 would be honoured.
“We have maintained the representation of our partners even though the NPP can now govern on its own,” he noted after the swearing-in ceremony.
