Mumbai: Welspun Enterprises Limited (WEL) has secured a major contract from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) for designing, building, and operating a 910 million litres per day (MLD) Water Treatment Plant (WTP) at Panjrapur, Maharashtra.Â
Valued at approximately Rs 3,145 crore, the project marks another significant milestone in WEL’s growing portfolio within India’s water infrastructure sector.
Project Scope and Duration
The Panjrapur WTP contract includes complete civil, mechanical, electrical, and instrumentation works, along with the construction of a treated water sump and a pumping station. The total contract value comprises an Operation & Maintenance (O&M) component of about Rs 1,156 crore and excludes a provisional sum of Rs 29 crore.
The design and construction phase will be completed within 48 months, after which WEL will operate and maintain the facility for a period of 15 years. This long-term engagement highlights WEL’s commitment to ensuring consistent quality and reliability in Mumbai’s water supply infrastructure.
Partnership with Veolia for Advanced Technology
For this project, WEL has partnered with Veolia, a global leader in water management technologies, as its technology provider. The collaboration aims to deploy state-of-the-art treatment processes to deliver high-quality, sustainable, and efficient water solutions. This partnership reflects WEL’s focus on integrating advanced technologies to promote resource efficiency and innovation-led infrastructure growth.
Expanding Presence in India’s Water Sector
In recent years, WEL has strengthened its presence in India’s water sector through several landmark projects. These include the 418 MLD Wastewater Treatment Facility at Dharavi, the 2000 MLD Water Treatment Plant at Bhandup, the Rural Water Supply Project under the Jal Jeevan Mission in Uttar Pradesh, and the Tertiary Treated Water Conveyance Tunnel Project in Mumbai.
Through its subsidiary, Welspun Michigan Engineers Limited, the company is also executing various urban water infrastructure and tunnelling projects across the country.
Strategic Significance and Future Vision
According to Chairman B.K. Goenka, the Panjrapur WTP project represents another major step in Welspun Enterprises’ journey toward becoming a leading player in India’s water sector. Upon completion of the Panjrapur and Bhandup projects, WEL will be responsible for treating nearly 70% of Mumbai’s freshwater requirement—reflecting the company’s vision of sustainable and inclusive growth.
Managing Director Sandeep Garg emphasized that the project aligns with Mumbai’s growing water demand due to urbanization. He stated that the Panjrapur WTP would strengthen the city’s water supply system while adhering to sustainability principles.
