New Delhi: The Union government rejected a media report claiming that India plans to compel smartphone manufacturers to share their source code as part of a proposed security overhaul, calling the claim “baseless and fake”.
The fact-check unit of Press Information Bureau (PIB) said the centre has not proposed any measure that would force smartphone makers to hand over their source code.
The government said the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has only initiated stakeholder consultations to develop an appropriate regulatory framework for mobile security. These discussions, it noted, are part of routine and standard processes followed while formulating safety and security standards across sectors.
According to the government, no final regulations have been framed so far. Any future mobile security framework will be shaped only after detailed consultations with industry stakeholders and discussions on various aspects of security standards.
The fact-check unit also urged the public to verify information through official sources before believing or sharing such reports.
