Kolkata: The West Bengal government had outlined upgrade plans for a number of district towns in its annual budgetary outlay.
The modernization will take place in Howrah, Diamond Harbour, Bardhaman, Durgapur, Bolpur, Krishnanagar, Barasat, Raiganj, Siliguri, Berhampore, Malda, Kalyani, Serampore, Andal, Bankura, Purulia, Digha, Medinipur, Jhargram, the NKDA area, Gangarampur, Jalpaiguri, Cooch Behar, Alipurduar, and Darjeeling.
According to the chief minister, Mamata Banerjee, consultants will be appointed to survey all the towns. Subsequently, a committee will be formed to explore how the project can be taken up without adversely affecting the existing inhabitants.
This urban regeneration proposal has found several takers among real estate developers and business leaders. The project, if properly implemented, can attract huge investment for the development of planned urban townships across the state.
Town planners can avoid displacement by creating mini-satellite townships with a proper master plan. The move could make these towns business-friendly, environment-friendly, and employment-friendly.
