Mumbai, 31st March (APAC Media): In a landmark administrative move, IAS Ashwini Bhide has been appointed as the new Commissioner of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), becoming the first woman to head Mumbai’s top civic body.
A 1995-batch officer, Bhide brings with her over two decades of experience in public administration. Prior to this appointment, she served as Secretary in the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO), where she played a pivotal role in advancing key infrastructure initiatives, most notably Mumbai’s underground metro project.
Bhide is well-acquainted with the workings of the BMC, having previously held the position of Additional Commissioner. Her earlier tenure equipped her with valuable insights into municipal governance, urban planning, and service delivery mechanisms, which are expected to prove instrumental in her new role.
According to official sources, Bhide is likely to serve a full term until 2030. During her tenure, she will oversee crucial sectors such as infrastructure development, sanitation, traffic management, and overall urban governance in Mumbai.
Her appointment comes at a critical juncture, as Mumbai grapples with increasing urban challenges, including population pressure, demand for sustainable infrastructure, and the need for efficient civic services.
Bhide’s elevation is also being viewed as a significant step toward greater representation of women in top bureaucratic positions, setting a progressive precedent for governance in India’s urban institutions.
