New Delhi: Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd, India’s leading telecommunications provider, announced the launch of JioSpaceFiber satellite broadband service recently, while showcasing at the India Mobile Congress as India’s inaugural satellite-driven gigabit fiber service.
The satellite broadband service aims to bring high-speed internet access to previously underserved regions in India. To demonstrate its extensive coverage, Reliance connected four remote locations: Gir in Gujarat, Korba in Chhattisgarh, Nabarangpur in Odisha, and ONGC in Jorhat, Assam.
Akash Ambani, Chairman of Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd, stated, “Jio have enabled millions of homes and businesses in India to experience broadband internet for the first time. With JioSpaceFiber, we expand our reach to cover the millions yet to be connected.”
He emphasised that JioSpaceFiber aims to offer gigabit-level access to government, education, healthcare, and entertainment services online, ensuring that everyone can fully participate in the growing digital society.
To enhance the availability of Jio True5G, even in remote areas, the satellite network will add mobile backhaul capacity. In collaboration with SES, Jio will leverage the latest medium earth orbit (MEO) satellite technology.
This partnership grants Jio access to SES’s O3b and O3b mPOWER satellites, positioning the company as a unique provider of reliable and scalable broadband services at competitive rates across India, the company said via a statement.
John-Paul Hemingway, Chief Strategy Officer at SES, expressed, “Together with Jio, we are honoured to support the Government of India’s Digital India initiative with a unique solution that aims at delivering multiple gigabits per second of throughput to any location in India.”
He also mentioned that fiber-like services from space are already operational in parts of India, and they anticipate that this will lead to digital transformation even in the most remote parts of the country.
According to a company statement, Jio already provides high-speed broadband to over 450 million Indians through fixed-line and wireless services. JioSpaceFiber now joins Jio’s existing broadband services, including JioFiber and JioAirFiber, ensuring that consumers and businesses can access reliable, fast, and low-latency internet and entertainment services, regardless of their location.
During the inaugural session, Mukesh Ambani highlighted that Jio has been deploying a 5G cell every 10 seconds and has installed over one million 5G cells across all 22 circles of India.
He said, “I am humbled to share that Jio alone has contributed to 85% of the overall 5G capacity in the country…and provided one of the fastest 5G internet speeds in the world.” He also mentioned that Jio’s 5G rollout is powered by a 100% in-house 5G stack, designed, developed, and manufactured entirely by Indian talent.
Through its 5G infrastructure, which includes services like JioFiber and JioAirFiber, Jio can provide 5G access to over 200 million unconnected homes and premises, making India the broadband capital of the world. Ambani added that India is among the top three nations with 5G-enabled capabilities, boasting over 125 million 5G users.
