New Delhi: The e-commerce and cloud company Amazon has achieved a renewable energy capacity of over 1.1 gigawatts in India, with the addition of a new 198-megawatt wind farm project in Osmanabad, Maharashtra.
With this development, Amazon now has 50 wind and solar projects throughout India. The company highlighted the addition of their “a new 198 megawatt (MW) wind farm in Osmanabad, Maharashtra, bringing the company to 50 wind and solar projects across India and surpassing 1.1 gigawatts (GW) of renewable energy capacity.”
Amazon also announced that, in addition to being the largest corporate purchaser of renewable energy globally, a status they have held since 2020, they have also become the largest corporate buyer of renewable energy in India.
Abhinav Singh, Vice President of Operations at Amazon India said, “Amazon’s wind and solar projects will help power all our operations with 100 per cent renewable energy by 2025, while also bringing jobs and economic benefits to India’s communities.”
He added that the company is eager to continue contributing to India’s economic and environmental objectives as part of Amazon’s commitment to becoming a more sustainable business.
Over the period from 2014 to 2022, Amazon’s wind and solar farms have produced an estimated $349 million (approximately Rs 2,885 crore) of direct and indirect investment in India’s communities.
They have also contributed around $87 million (approximately Rs 719 crore) to the country’s overall GDP and supported over 20,600 local full-time equivalent jobs in 2022 alone, as per a new economic model developed by Amazon, the company’s statement said.
