New Delhi: The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) is launching a month-long Clean Toilets Challenge on November 17th with the aim of concentrating efforts on ensuring the functionality and sustainability of Community Toilets/Public Toilets (CT/PTs) while identifying the most effective models and efficient restroom facilities.
The initiative underscores the importance of continuous upkeep, refurbishment, beautification, and ease of access to these facilities.
To address the global sanitation crisis and foster awareness, World Toilet Day is observed every 19th of November, officially declared by the UN General Assembly in 2013. This year, the focus is on the theme ‘Accelerating Change.’
Added to that, the 2023 Water Conference unveiled the Water Action Agenda in March, consolidating commitments from governments, companies, organisations, and institutions to drive rapid change in sanitation and water. The action plan emphasises the urgency for all stakeholders to fulfil their promises promptly.
Scheduled from November 19th (World Toilet Day) to November 22nd for this year, the challenge serves as a prelude to Good Governance Day. During this period, the initiative will identify, felicitate, and share the best model toilets, fostering early replicability by other cities.
Efficient sanitation services are integral to good governance, aligning with the core objective of the Clean Toilets Challenge. The Clean Toilets Challenge seeks to propel improvements in sanitation infrastructure, promoting a global commitment to accessible and sustainable toilet facilities.
