New Delhi: During his address at the Kashi Tamil Sangamam, Prime Minister Narendra Modi utilised the real-time artificial intelligence-based tool ‘Bhashini’ in Varanasi. He described it as a “new beginning” in simplifying communication with the public.
‘Bhashini’ was specifically tailored for the Tamil-speaking audience at the event, operating as an AI-driven language translation system to facilitate conversations among individuals speaking different Indian languages.
‘Digital India Bhashini’ was unveiled during the inauguration of Digital India Week in Gujarat in 2022. It is an initiative aimed at improving internet accessibility and digital services in Indian languages. The platform enables communication in native languages and is available through Android and iOS apps.
‘Bhashini’ is a pivotal element in the ‘Digital Ecosystem,’ with the government outlining its journey across four tracks: Foundation, Contribution, Innovation, and Grand Challenge. The platform’s roadmap focuses on enhancing accessibility to digital content in Indian languages.
The ‘Bhasa Daan’ section within ‘Bhashini’ encourages contributions to crowdsourcing initiatives. This initiative, part of Project Bhashini, gathers language inputs across multiple Indian languages, creating extensive datasets to train AI models. Contributions can be made anonymously, establishing an open-source repository accessible to everyone.
Categories within ‘Bhasha Daan’ include ‘Suno India’ for contributing audio content, ‘Bolo India’ for donating voices through sentence recordings, ‘Likho India’ for translating provided text, and ‘Dekho India’ for typing text or labelling images.
