New Delhi: The schedule for the Lok Sabha elections will be announced through a press conference scheduled for 3 pm tomorrow, March 16, the Election Commission revealed today. The announcement will also cover the poll schedules for some state assemblies.
With an increase of 6 per cent in registered voters since 2019, nearly 97 crore Indians are eligible to vote for the Lok Sabha elections this year, the Election Commission had announced.
The electoral rolls were finalised across all States/UTs in early February after an extensive Special Summary Revision 2024 process. The EC also concluded a nationwide survey of poll preparedness, including a tour of Jammu and Kashmir this week.
The Election Commission anticipates an increase in the total number of polling stations from 10.36 lakh in 2019 to 11.8 lakh in 2024. The number of voters is also projected to rise from 90 crore in 2019 to over 95 crore. These factors will influence security arrangements and the phasing of elections.
Both regional and national parties have begun announcing their candidates for the 543 Parliamentary constituencies.
Several states, including Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, Sikkim, and Arunachal Pradesh, are gearing up for simultaneous Lok Sabha and assembly polls in the coming months. The present Lok Sabha’s term concludes on June 16, necessitating the formation of a new House before that date.
In 2019, the polls were conducted in seven phases, down from nine phases in 2014.
