New Delhi: At the recent World Energy Congress, Pankaj Agarwal, the Secretary of the Ministry of Power spoke about India’s crucial role in global efforts to tackle climate change. He highlighted India’s active participation in the COP28 UN Climate Change Conference, where it acted as a catalyst for global energy transitions. The conference, held in Rotterdam, was a hotspot for discussing energy security, access, and sustainability.
Agarwal shared the outcomes of the G20 New Delhi Leaders’ Declaration, where India committed to increasing energy efficiency and ramping up renewable energy sources. By doubling the global energy efficiency rate and tripling renewable energy capacity by 2030, India plans to lead by example.
India’s Mission LiFE was also highlighted by Agarwal, a movement that promotes sustainable living in line with global agreements from COP27 and the G20, and echoed global consensus on transitioning towards carbon neutrality, with a focus on Carbon Capture, Utilisation, and Storage (CCUS) and green hydrogen.
Acknowledging the challenges of transitioning to cleaner energy, Agarwal stressed the need for inclusive and technology-driven solutions, citing India’s Revamped Energy Security Scenarios (IESS) 2047 dashboard as a crucial tool for informed decision-making. He also did not forget the grassroots efforts. He praised initiatives like the PM-KUSUM Scheme and solar rooftop programs for their role in promoting environmental sustainability and creating jobs.
The Secretary positioned India’s upcoming Carbon Market as a further advancement, signalling a big step towards sustainability.
Lastly, Agarwal called for solidarity and requested developed nations to support developing countries in accessing funds and clean technologies.
