New Delhi: President Droupadi Murmu announced that the government will provide free treatment to the elderly over the age of 70 through the Ayushman Bharat scheme. She made the announcement during her address to the joint sitting of the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha in Parliament.
The Ayushman Bharat-Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY) health insurance scheme will offer coverage of up to ₹5 lakh per family per year for secondary and tertiary care hospitalisation. This aligns with the 100-day agendas for the Union health ministry to expand the Ayushman Bharat coverage. The ministry is also considering the possibility of implementing the U-WIN portal on a pan-India scale to digitise routine vaccinations. Additional objectives include the establishment of the National Health Claims Exchange, the utilisation of drone services to transport medical supplies from AIIMS and other Institutes of National Importance in challenging terrain, and the provision of cashless treatment services to ex-servicemen.
The interim budget has expanded the Ayushman Bharat health insurance scheme to include grassroots healthcare workers, such as Anganwadi and ASHA workers, in addition to the 55 crores of the country’s poorest individuals.
