New Delhi: The Ministry of Education has raised concerns over a ₹3.2 crore variable pay given to IIM Rohtak Director Dheeraj Sharma over three years. The government flagged this payment after its Internal Audit Wing (IAW) found the amount to be excessively high, surpassing 200% of the director’s total salary.
The pay, disbursed for the years 2018-19, 2019-20, and 2020-21, is reportedly far above the standard percentage allowed for variable pay. The IAW also deemed the process followed to approve the payment as “void.”
President Droupadi Murmu received complaints about the issue, which led to the ministry’s inquiry. These complaints also included allegations of financial irregularities at IIM Rohtak, such as improper issuance of mobile phones to faculty.
In response, the Ministry of Education has asked the institute to investigate those involved in the decision and to propose measures to recover the excess pay. However, IIM Rohtak stated that the payment was made according to the IIM Act and approved by its board with full consensus. The institute denied any inquiry into the matter by the ministry.
