Hassan: Karnataka Chief Minister, Siddaramaihah inaugurated the first phase of the Yettinahole water project that aims to supply drinking water to seven nearby districts including Kolar, Chikkaballapur, Bengaluru rural, Ramanagar, Tumakuru, Hassan, and Chikkamagalur. The project was launched at the Doddanagara pump house in Sakleshpur taluk, Hassan.
The initiative will cover 29 drought-hit taluks of Karnataka. For this purpose, water pumped from the storage units built at streams in the Western Ghats has been collected in distribution chamber 3 at Doddanagar village. The water lifted is now released into canals for around 32 km from where it will be diverted temporarily via Veda Valley to Vani Villas Saqar Dam at a distance of 132.5 km, lifting around 85 cusecs of water every day.
According to the officials, the project will benefit 6,657 villages and 38 towns in seven districts. The total estimated cost of the project is Rs.23,251.66 crore of which Rs.16,152.05 crore has been utilized so far. Out of the 24.01 thousand million cubic feet (tmcft) of water lifted from the streams, 14.056 tmcft will be utilized for drinking purposes, and the remaining will be used to fill up the tanks.
