Kolkata: The West Bengal government has appointed Dr. Manoj Pant, a 1991-batch IAS officer from the West Bengal cadre, as the new Chief Secretary of the state. He takes over from B P Gopalika, a 1989-batch IAS officer from the same cadre, who retired on August 31, 2024. Dr. Pant previously served as the Additional Chief Secretary for Irrigation & Waterways in West Bengal.
B P Gopalika was originally scheduled to retire on May 31, 2024, but the central government extended his tenure for an additional three months, allowing him to continue as the Chief Secretary until the end of August. Gopalika had assumed the role of Chief Secretary on December 31, 2023, succeeding H K Dwivedi, after serving as the Home Secretary of the state.
Dr. Manoj Pant’s appointment as Chief Secretary marks a significant shift in the state’s administrative leadership. With his extensive experience in public administration and a strong track record in governance, Dr. Pant is expected to guide West Bengal through its ongoing developmental and administrative challenges.
