New Delhi: In a first, the Union Government launched the BharatGen project, an initiative to make generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) available to citizens in their language. The project is under the National Mission on Interdisciplinary Cyber-Physical Systems and is spearheaded by the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay. It aims to create generative AI systems that can produce high-quality text and multimodal content in different Indian languages.
According to the Science and Technology Minister, Jitendra Singh, this initiative is the world’s first government-funded multimodal large language model project. It will focus on creating efficient and inclusive AI in Indian languages, thereby supporting data-efficient learning for Indian languages with limited digital presence. A key feature of BharatGen is its open–source foundational models, helping democratize AI across the country. The project is expected to make AI more accessible and create a more collaborative ecosystem wherein researchers and developers can work together to develop innovative solutions.
The project is planned to be completed in the next 2 years and will benefit various government, private, educational, and research institutions.
