New Delhi: The Union Government has announced the appointment of senior IPS Officer Harinath Mishra as the Secretary (Security) in the Cabinet Secretariat to oversee the Prime Minister’s security. He will succeed IPS Swagat Das, a 1987 batch Chhatisgarh cadre IPS Officer who has retired recently.
Mishra is an officer of the 1990 batch belonging to the Kerala cadre. Before taking up the new role, he was serving as the Special Director of the Intelligence Bureau (IB). An experienced officer, Mishra is a two-time recipient of the President’s Award for his outstanding service. He was also presented with the Home Minister’s Efficiency Award on October 31 this year in recognition of his exceptional work. He brings a wealth of experience to the new role. Mishra has also previously worked in the Bihar State Intelligence Bureau (SIB) for around two and a half years and also served as the Superintendent of Police (SP) in the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in Patna.
As Secretary (Security), Mishra will be the administrative head of the Special Protection Group (SPG). The body provides round-the-clock security to the Prime Minister and his family which includes ensuring the safety and protection of the Prime Minister’s official residence. The SPG also extends its services to former prime ministers and their immediate families for five years after the leader demits office, provided they reside in an allocated government residence.
His appointment to the post was confirmed by an order issued by the Ministry of Personnel. He has also received the necessary approvals from the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet.
