Bengaluru: Ananth Technologies Limited (ATL) has emerged as the first private Indian company authorized to develop and operate a geostationary communication satellite. The achievement follows ATL’s selection as the beneficiary of the Announcement of Opportunity (AO) by the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorization Center (IN-SPACe).
The Announcement of Opportunity grants ATL access to Indian Orbital Resources, enabling the development of a Geostationary Orbit (GSO) satellite utilizing Ka-band frequency. This high-throughput communication satellite will address India’s growing demand for robust and reliable communication infrastructure. The project forms part of the Indian Space Policy 2023, which promotes private-sector collaboration in space initiatives. Supporting this policy, IN-SPACe introduced the Norms, Guidelines, and Procedures (NGP) in May 2024 to streamline the involvement of non-government entities (NGEs) in the Indian space ecosystem. The AO, launched in July 2024 and concluding in October 2024, established a clear framework for private enterprises to access critical orbital resources.
Ananth Technologies plans to develop, launch, and operate an advanced, multi-beam high-throughput satellite aimed at enhancing India’s communication network. The company will also oversee critical processes like frequency coordination with international satellite operators, regulatory filings with the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), and ensuring compliance with global standards.
The project aligns with India’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India) mission, which seeks to promote domestic technological capabilities, including satellite communication. The move is expected to address connectivity gaps, particularly in rural and underserved areas. By enhancing communication networks, the project aims to benefit sectors such as education, healthcare, and e-governance, thereby contributing to India’s socio-economic development.
ATL emphasized the significance of this opportunity in positioning itself as a leader in the Indian private satellite sector. The company stated that the initiative represents a substantial step toward self-reliance in satellite technology and capacity building. It aims to bridge digital divides across the country and support critical services through advanced satellite communication infrastructure.
