New Delhi: Sembcorp Industries, a Singapore-based energy and urban development company, has signed two non-binding Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with the Odisha government to explore the development of a green hydrogen facility and an industrial park in the state.
Green Hydrogen Facility in Odisha
The first MoU was signed between Sembcorp Green Hydrogen India Private Limited, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Sembcorp, and the Industrial Promotion and Investment Corporation of Odisha Limited (IPICOL). The agreement outlines plans to set up a green hydrogen production facility with a targeted capacity of 720,000 metric tonnes annually. The facility is expected to generate over 2,000 jobs during its operational phase and play a key role in India’s clean energy goals.
The proposed facility will be strategically located to leverage Odisha’s resource potential and align with India’s broader efforts to transition to a low-carbon economy.
Industrial Park Development
The second MoU involves Sembcorp Development Ltd, another wholly-owned subsidiary of the company, and the Odisha Industrial Infrastructure Development Corporation (IDCO). This agreement focuses on exploring the development of an industrial park in Odisha, which is expected to boost industrial activity and attract investment in the region.
Strengthening Bilateral Ties
The agreements were signed in the presence of key dignitaries, including Singapore’s Minister for Transport and Finance, Chee Hong Tat, and Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi. The MoUs align with the bilateral framework established between Singapore and India, focusing on sustainability and clean energy collaborations.
Sembcorp’s interest in Odisha follows the Chief Minister’s visit to the company’s headquarters in Singapore last year, where discussions on green energy projects, including a green ammonia facility, took place.
By signing these MoUs, Sembcorp aims to strengthen its presence in India, supported by investor-friendly policies and resource availability in Odisha, marking a step forward in the country’s clean energy transition.
