New Delhi: The Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) has approved capital acquisition proposals worth over Rs 54,000 crore, strengthening the capabilities of the Indian Army, Navy and Air Force.
The approvals, chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on 20 March, cover key equipment upgrades and new procurements to enhance combat readiness.
Upgrades for T-90 Tanks in the Indian Army
The Indian Army will upgrade its T-90 tanks with more powerful 1,350 HP engines, replacing the existing 1,000 HP engines.
The move aims to improve the tanks’ power-to-weight ratio, enhancing mobility in challenging terrains, particularly in high-altitude areas.
Indian Navy to Strengthen Anti-Submarine Warfare
The DAC has approved the procurement of Varunastra torpedoes for the Indian Navy. Developed by the Naval Science & Technological Laboratory, these ship-launched torpedoes are designed to improve anti-submarine warfare capabilities.
The acquisition aligns with the Navy’s efforts to enhance underwater threat detection and response.
Advanced Surveillance Aircraft for the Air Force
The Indian Air Force will receive new Airborne Early Warning & Control (AEW&C) aircraft systems.
These systems, crucial for modern aerial combat, will improve surveillance, reconnaissance and coordination in military operations.
The addition is expected to enhance the Air Force’s ability to detect and respond to threats in real-time.
Streamlining Defence Procurement
As part of the Ministry of Defence’s ‘Year of Reforms’ initiative for 2025, the DAC has introduced new guidelines to streamline the procurement process. The revised framework is designed to reduce delays and improve efficiency in capital acquisitions.
The approvals reflect ongoing efforts to modernize India’s defence forces, focusing on indigenous capabilities and operational preparedness across all three services.
