Raipur: State-owned hydropower company SJVN has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Chhattisgarh government and Chhattisgarh State Power Generation Company Limited (CSPGCL) to develop a 1,800 MW Pumped Storage Project (PSP) in Kotpali, Balrampur district. The project, with an estimated investment of Rs 9,500 crore, is expected to enhance the state’s renewable energy infrastructure and provide grid stability.
Key Details of the Agreement
The MoU was signed by Sushil Kumar Sharma, Director (Projects), SJVN; Subodh Kumar Singh, Principal Secretary, Energy Department of Chhattisgarh; and Sanjeev Kumar Katiyar, Managing Director, CSPGCL. The signing took place in the presence of Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Dev Sai and Commerce & Industry Minister Lakhan Lal Dewangan.
The Kotpali PSP will function as an off-stream closed-loop system capable of generating approximately 3,967 million units (MU) of energy annually. Pumped storage projects are gaining traction as they help manage fluctuations in renewable energy supply by storing excess power during low-demand hours and releasing it during peak periods.
Economic and Employment Impact
The project is expected to create around 5,000 direct and indirect jobs during its development phase. It will also attract large-scale investment in the region, supporting local industries and infrastructure development.
Growing Focus on Pumped Storage Projects
As India expands its renewable energy capacity, PSPs are being considered crucial for maintaining a stable power supply. With rising solar and wind energy adoption, such storage projects can help mitigate intermittency issues and reduce dependence on fossil fuel-based power generation.
The Kotpali PSP aligns with India’s broader energy transition goals and could play a key role in strengthening Chhattisgarh’s renewable energy ecosystem. The timeline for the construction and completion of the project has not been disclosed yet.
