New Delhi: The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has introduced major changes to the Class 10 and 12 curriculum for the new academic session, focusing on skill-based learning and restructuring board exams and grading.
Skill Subjects Made Mandatory for Class 10
Class 10 students must now select one skill-based subject from Computer Applications, Information Technology, or Artificial Intelligence. Additionally, they are required to choose either English or Hindi as a language subject, which can be studied in Class 9 or 10.
CBSE has also revised the passing criteria for students who fail in core subjects like Mathematics, Science, Social Science, or a language. If a student fails in one of these subjects, a passed skill-based or optional language subject can now be used to determine their final result.
New Skill Electives for Class 12
Class 12 students will have access to four new vocational subjects:
Land Transportation Associate
Electronics and Hardware
Physical Activity Trainer
Design Thinking and Innovation
These subjects are part of CBSE’s effort to integrate practical and vocational education into the curriculum. The revised structure for Class 12 now includes seven core learning areas: Languages, Humanities, Mathematics, Sciences, Skill Subjects, General Studies, and Health & Physical Education.
Changes in Grading and Exam Format
CBSE has introduced a new 9-point grading scale for both Class 10 and 12 board exams, replacing the previous marking system. Additionally, the exam schedule for Class 10 has been modified. Students will now take board exams twice a year—once in February and again in April.
However, Class 12 exams will continue with the annual format, with the next cycle starting on 17 February 2026. These changes mark a shift toward a more flexible and skill-oriented assessment system, aiming to balance academic and practical knowledge.
